Some areas of this section have been changed and are still being modified during the 16-17 school year.  As the plan for Renaissance continues to develop, more information will be shared.

Academic Rally

An Academic Rally is a celebration assembly which includes entertainment, recognition, and rewards for students reaching certain levels of success during each grading period and/or staffulty members who deserve special recognition.  Academic Rallies will occur after each nine week grading period; and will usually be held in the auditorium, gym, and/or outdoors.  Students meeting criteria to earn an academic, attendance, and/or a discipline punch will be recognized and rewarded for their accomplishments.  They will receive incentive cards, appropriately punched, for their achievements.  These cards will entitle them to random perks throughout the next nine weeks.  The more punches a student has--the more perks that will be received.  Those students who do not qualify to attend an Academic Rallywill continue to follow their regular schedule.

Eagle Swoops and Snatches

Eagle Swoops will be made by Renaissance Committee members, the Eagleship Team and/or administration.  There are two kinds of Eagle Swoops--surprised and requested.  A requested swoop is a surprise to the students/class who has done something their teachers feels is exceptional and deserves a swoop.  Example:  The entire class made an A on a spelling test or everyone has had their homework all week.  The teacher request this class receive an Eagle Swoop for this outstanding event.  Whenever the teacher has requested the swoop be made, the group comes into the room in celebration, reads the reason for the swoop and rewards the students/class.  A surprise swoop is a surprise to both the teacher and students/class.  These will usually occur at the beginning or end of a class, as to minimize class disturbance.  Only those meeting swoop requirements will be rewarded.  Example:  An Eagle Swoop comes into a classroom and announces, "Everyone who can show us their agenda has been filled out for the entire week receives a reward"  or "Everyone who has their card and has two or more punches on it come forth to receive a reward."

An Eagle Snatch is where anyone meeting the requirements is snatched out of the class to receive a reward.  This too will usually occur at the end of the class.  Example:  An announcement is made, "Anyone who has their card with them and has a perfect attendance punch will be dismissed five minutes early to lunch today" or "Anyone who has their card with them and has a gold punch, come to the gym lobby for a treat at this time."

Eagleship Team

Eagleship Team members will be the liaison between their grade and Renaissance.  Some of their job duties will be to help with both recognition and reward input and distribution.  Team members will help organize and conduct Eagle Swoops for their grade level.  Team members will help prepare for academic rallies.  Members will be chosen anonymously by the quality of their statement, a copy of last year's report card, a discipline report of the previous school year, and their attendance rate for the previous school year.

Incentive Cards
  • Incentive cards are I.D. cards complete with students' name, picture and homeroom; which entitles qualifying students to receive certain perks, recognition, and rewards during a nine-week grading period.  These cards have three possible areas of achievement:  academic, attendance, and discipline.
  • The academic area will consist of three levels.  GOLD - which is all A's, SILVER - which is A's and B's, and BRONZE - which is improvement of one letter grade, without dropping in others.  Students will receive only one academic punch, of the highest level, in which they qualify.
  • An attendance punch RED will be given to those students that meet the following criteria:  (1) no unexcused absences/occurences, (2) only one excused absence/occurence, (3) only one excused and one verified absences/occurences and (4) no more that two verified absences/occurences.
  • A discipline punch WHITE will be given to those students with no discipline points in a nine-week grading period.  (Discipline points are earned by receiving a detention, bus write-up, in-school suspension, out-of-school suspension, or a disciplinary hearing.)
  • Incentive cards will be awarded to qualifying students during academic rallies each of the nine-week grading periods.
  • Students will have to be in possession of their cards in order to receive surprise, random rewards throughout the following nine-weeks.  (No going to locker or calling home to get cards!)
  • Replacement cards can be purchased from Mr. Copeland.

Very Important Parents

The V.I.P. Club gives parents an opportunity to help students experience success in their educational quests.  Through Renaissance, parents can help provide tangible rewards for students who earn recognition in academic, attendance, and discipline areas as well as rewards for outstanding staffulty contributions.  Each V.I.P. member contributes a minimum of twenty-five dollars for the present school year which will be used in the development of the recognition process and to support Renaissance at Westmoreland Middle School.
